7 Best Toronto Neighbourhoods For Young Families

Toronto buyers and renters are all looking for a home that will be the right fit for them. If you’re a parent, you want to find a home in a neighbourhood where your children will also thrive. From children’s recreation and activities to schools and parks, there is a lot to consider when trying to find the right place for your family.

While there are many areas that young families enjoy living in, here are 7 of Toronto's favourite familiy friendly neighbourhoods to check out when looking for a home your whole family will love.

The Beach

We’ll start with one of Toronto’s most beloved neighbourhoods, The Beach. Known for waterfront trails and sandy shores, this community feels like a peaceful retreat. It also has many great cafes and restaurants along Queen St East, along with the streetcar for access to downtown. It’s ideal for young children because of the many local parks, schools and activities for parents and kids. It also has Kew Gardens and the beach of course, where kids can wade in the water on sunny days!

Riverdale

Home to Greektown and many beautiful single-family homes, Riverdale is one of the most sought after areas for young families. There are many top rated schools, classes and clubs for kids, and public parks. Parents will love the amazing restaurants along The Danforth. Kids will love the playgrounds at Withrow Park and the great toboggan hill at Riverdale Park. On the weekend, walk to Riverdale Farm to clubs for parents and little ones, followed by some time meeting barnyard animals!

High Park/Bloor West Village

High Park is the city’s largest park, where you can also visit a Zoo in the heart of the city (for free), take kids to the incredible adventure playground, and ride bikes along trails by Grenadier Pond. The neighbourhood is also home to Bloor West Village, with eclectic shops, restaurants, and patios.

Roncesvalles

East of High Park, this community (also lovingly nicknamed Roncy) is close to Queen Street West for fun nights out, while also being a great place to raise a family. Roncesvalles Avenue is what makes this Toronto neighbourhood stand out. It is a vibrant stretch of restaurants, pubs, shops, and much more. It is also close to High Park and the farmer’s market at Sorauren Park! What also makes the area unique are the cool hard lofts that many residents call home.

East Danforth / Greenwood-Coxwell

This area is still comparatively affordable when you look at neighbouring ‘hoods (Leslieville and The Beach to the south and Riverdale to the west). Like Riverdale, it is full of charming single-family homes near Danforth Avenue. There is an increasing influx of independent shops, galleries, and cafes in the area. There are also many shops catering to young children, many with in-store mommy-and-me classes! Visit the pool at Monarch Park, the ice rink at Greenwood Park, or the playground and farmer’s market at East Lynn Park!

Leaside

This neighbourhood is found north of Rosedale, and is popular among families. The area has great schools, parks, and plenty of destination recreation venues including a trampoline park and sporting venues. Near Sunnybrook Park, you can even take the family to the park’s public horseback riding school! It is also by the Ontario Science Centre for fun weekends learning and exploring with your kids!

Rosedale-Moore Park

Popular with some of Toronto’s more affluent residents, this neighbourhood is home to stately houses with plenty of space for a growing family. There are many community parks, schools, playgrounds, and even trails through reservation land. David A Balfour Park, Chorley Park, and Craigleith Gardens surround the neighbourhood. Visit the many exciting community events at the Don Valley Brickworks, or shop for fresh food, drinks, and crafts!
