Looking for some interior design inspiration this year? If you are buying a new home in 2018 or simply want to freshen up your space, there are many beautiful and unique ideas that will make every room look amazing.
We gathered up some of our favorite ideas, and added a few that are still popular in home design- for good reason. Certain “trends” become lasting staples of style after all!
Here are some of the Interior Design Trends You’ll Love in 2018 (and for years to come):
Hello Colour!
Rich colours are giving energy to the neutral palettes we’ve been seeing for a while. While the white and light grey look is still popular, designers are incorporating warmer and bolder tones.
Think about using darker blues, purple, red, and orange to give a unique personality to your home. Walls in brighter colours and upholstered furniture in warm shades are a great place to start. Still like white walls? Add bold primary colours against white to make them pop.
And, hello black?...
Back in (Matte) Black
Along with a turn to colours, there is also a turn to a bolder shade. While white has dominated interior design lately, many design experts point out a shift to black.
To keep it feeling stylish, choose matte black. This look is particularly attractive with cabinet lowers, bathroom vanities or tiles, front doors, and even statement walls! Just make sure to balance it out with pops of colour and…
Wood and Leaves
Lighten up spaces with darker tones, or bring some soothing nature inside with wood furniture pieces and lush potted plants.
Especially gorgeous? “Live edge” wood, such as in shelves and coffee tables and plants of the leafy green variety (try ferns and hanging plants). These two elements will make any space feel more tranquil and, well, alive.
Hammered Copper
Many fixtures you’ve probably seen in modern homes are stainless steel. Most notably with sinks, there are more people choosing to do something different than stainless steel or white.
Hammered copper has a really cool look, and goes with a variety of kitchen and bathroom styles. Consider an “apron sink” in copper or even hammered copper backsplash tiles to add a unique industrial touch to your kitchen.
Antique Treasures
There’s no better way to make a space stand out than to add pieces no one else has. Have your own unique finds on display to have a home that is eclectic and stylish. Go treasure hunting at local antique stores, online auctions, estate sales, and flea markets.
Some
of the ideas people are using: vintage suitcases as storage/wall art, antique
picture frames, salvaged dressers and tables painted in bright colours, and
antique tins and advertising signs. Walk into an antique store and find many
more pieces you’ll love right away, or can repurpose
in innovative ways. You'll also love telling people about the history of an item, and how you had the eye to spot it!
Floating Shelves
Perfect
for displaying your treasures, floating shelves look great and can be installed
anywhere. Another thing to love about floating shelves in smaller spaces like condos? You can install them high up on
walls without taking up floor space
like a traditional shelving unit would! They are also a great way to
incorporate some live edge wood (Notice the matte black walls, wood floating shelves, and unique treasures in the photo above)!
Mixed Textures
To give your home some interest, mixing textures is a fun idea. Think about adding fuzzy rugs, metal stools, a wood table, acrylic chairs, and other different materials together in one space. The variety will keep your home from being too one-dimensional, and means there’s something different everywhere you look.
Want it all to work well together? Choose colours that complement each other. For example: a grey metal chair, white fuzzy throw pillows, brown leather, and a wood coffee table. Add the leafy green plants we mentioned, and it will all come together! (Notice the above dining room has wood, metal, plastic, glass, and fresh flowers all together in complementary shades!)
Now that we’ve mentioned some of the exciting trends to look for in 2018, here are some styles that have stuck around (because they deserve to!)…
Still In Style:
Industrial metal
chairs and light fixtures.
Gallery walls, and round or irregular shaped wall hangings.
Gold fixtures in black/white kitchens.
Exposed brick and concrete walls
Mid century modern furniture (wood 50’s style couch legs, dressers, and unique colours such as olive green and burnt orange)
Hopefully some of these ideas have inspired you. Whatever you’re planning to do with your home, stay true to what style you can see yourself enjoying for a long time. Trends come and go, but certain things will always make your home feel distinctly yours. Happy decorating!
